Recognizing Animal Cruelty
What constitutes animal cruelty?
Animal cruelty occurs when someone intentionally injures or harms an animal or when a person willfully deprives an animal of food, water or necessary medical care. Here are some signs that may indicate abuse or neglect:
* Tick or flea infestations
* Wounds on the body
* Patches of missing hair
* Extremely thin, starving animal
* Limping
* An owner striking or otherwise physically abusing an animal
* Dogs who are repeatedly left alone without food and water, and often chained in a yard
* Dogs who have been hit by cars—or are showing any of the signs listed here—and have not been taken to a veterinarian
* Dogs who are kept outside without shelter in extreme weather conditions
* Animals who cower in fear or act aggressively when approached by their owner
Where to Call About Animal Cruelty and How to Make a Complaint:
If you suspect cruelty to animals in Livingston Parish LAcall 225.788.6940 and speak directly to one of our volunteers. Call when you first notice a problem. Don’t wait for the situation to deteriorate, or for the weather to get worse. A bad situation won’t get better by itself. We will need to know:
- WHAT the problem is. Try to differentiate between what you see and what you think might be the case.
- WHERE it is. A street address is best, but please don’t guess about a street number if you don’t know it. If you do not know the street address provide an accurate description of the place with directions to the nearest intersection or landmark.
- NUMBER AND TYPE OF ANIMALS involved. Are they outside or in a building? Without such information we might see a healthy animal at a location and miss the animal in trouble because it is not visible.
- NAME OF THE OWNER, or person responsible for the animals, if you know it.
It would be helpful if you would leave your name and telephone number too. We will keep it confidential, but we may need to get back to you with questions, especially if we cannot find the place on the first try. If we have your information we will follow up and let you know how the case is resolved.
If you would like to email your complaint, please include your contact information, we may need to speak to you! You may send your emails to laspca@aol.com
Remember, your call can make the difference in an animal’s life!
